At St Thomas More School, we follow the Design Technology programme of study outlined in the National Curriculum. The aim of our curriculum is to ensure all receive a high-quality education and that all pupils are confident in the fundamentals of Design Technology.

Our aim is for all children to have the ability to evaluate existing products and their designs while applying their knowledge, skills and understanding into creating their own products in a range of meaningful contexts.

We believe that Design and technology gives children the skills and abilities to engage positively with the world around them. We want the children to see Design Technology as being relevant to their world and applicable to everyday life in addition to being something that develops throughout their school life and beyond.

Y1

This term the children have worked hard to develop their Design skills through building their own boat structures. The children learnt about uses of different boats and generate a design criteria for a purposeful, functional, appealing product.

Y2

The Y2 children received a letter from Greenpeace asking them to design windmills for the local area. The children create a functional and appealing windmill out of recycled materials for Greenpeace to use to generate electricity.

Y3

The children in Y3 create a sponge cake for King Charles using the correct measurements needed for each ingredient. The children worked collaboratively to ensure that the cake was golden brown in colour colour, with juicy strawberry jam in the middle and tasted delicious!

Y4

During the Spring term, we had a DT Compassionate Cooking Day! We prepared and tasted a vegetarian meal consisting of a vegetarian chilli and a fruit crumble. The children used a range of cooking skills such as grating, slicing and weighing ingredients. They were eager to taste what they had made.

Y6

This term the Y6 children created 'Wartime Vegetable Turnovers' for the Anderson family who lived in Sheffield during the 1940s during WW2. The children were tasked with designing and cooking a nutritional, healthy meal for the Anderson Family so they can survive and feed their families. The children ensured they used ingredients that would be readily accessible in wartime Britain.
